An ambitious territory

The Metz Eurometropole is committed to a proactive approach, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the area by 83% by 2050, as well as optimizing energy consumption and improving air quality.

In this context, it has adopted its second Territorial Climate Air Energy Plan and has been awarded the Energy Transition Territory label, making the circular economy a lever to anchor itself in a dynamic ecological transition.

An incentive policy

The Eurométropole de Metz, in partnership with Agence Inspire Metz, the Chambre de Métiers et de l'Artisanat de la Moselle and the Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie Moselle Métropole Metz, is supporting and promoting craftsmen and shopkeepers acting in favor of the environment, thanks to the Eco-Challenges.

Remarkable experts in the energy sector

The region boasts a number of dynamic local players:

  • UEM (Usine d'électricité de Metz), France's leading local independent producer and distributor of electricity, thanks to a biomass unit, a cogeneration plant and various renewable sources (notably photovoltaic and hydraulic). It operates the 4th largest urban heating network in France, with over 60% renewable energy.
  • Efluid, a UEM subsidiary, offers software solutions to energy suppliers.
  • 45-8 ENERGY, a specialist in native hydrogen extraction and helium recovery, contributes to the Eurometropole's international reputation.

Developing the hydrogen sector

The Metz Eurometropole has initiated a consortium with the John Cockerill group and UEM to produce green hydrogen for the conversion of the engines of the local authority's buses and refuse collection vehicles (as part of the roll-out of the next exclusive right-of-way bus line). This collaboration makes the decarbonization of road transport THE priority. Overall, it's an opportunity to develop an ecosystem covering hydrogen production, demand and uses.
